I'm looking to replace a Tempstar airconditioner. Hopefully capture the government rebate...

It was manufactured in 1990. The model number is CA1048qka1. The house is about 3000 sq ft. I initially assumed it was a 5 ton unit, but after looking at the model number Im assuming the decode means 10 seer, 48,000 btu (4 ton). Would be great if it is as I don't know of any manufacturers that have a 5 ton unit that will qualify. Seems as the biggest they can do is 4 ton.

I'm replacing the furnace also (which does qualify).

Am I correct?

thanks.

It is a 4 ton. That doesn't mean it is the right size. Too many oversized back then. Demand a good load calc for sizing the furnace & A/C.

Actually under many installations, the 95% furnace install pretty much runs up the $5000 max under the tax credit so you may not need to buy a 16 SEER system unless you want to.

Yours is an 8 SEER.

Thanks for the reply. Would you be able to decode the furnace also? I'm trying to figure out what the efficiency gain is there too.

Its also a Tempstar, model #NUGG150DK03, input btu is 150k, alternate input btu per hr is 120k. I understand the 150k btu input, but what is its output btu? what is its efficiency? it was also manufactured in 1990.

thanks again. John

You have two choices.
If you want to be unintelligent about it,you will replace with the same size as you have.
If in the other hand you value comfort and effiency then you will have your house evaluated with a load calc.Any co that does that for you is doing you and your wallet the best that can be done.I would advize you get a duct evaluation done at the same time so that you can take advantage of your new hi effiency equipment.
Remember what you do now will pay you in comfort and dollars for the next 20 years.

75,000 BTUs of heat.

What size A/C you need isn't something we can answer. The installing dealer SHOULD measure the house and size based on the needs of his calculations.

I know what your saying, but the home had the outside unit stolen. The inside unit is there and I want to match up the coil and the condensor. I think I gave you the mod # of the furnace I will go back in the am and open the door to coil and see if I find some new serial/mod numbers.

The model number of coil is exm36f1981. I think this means a 3 ton coil. But can you tell the seer rating from the model or serial number. Serial l971867754? Thanks for the help.
