My contractor is trying to convince me to replace the compressor inside my 13 year old Goodman unit that uses R22. The cost sounds astronomical with 10lb of R22 being required, though that is only 25% of the total quote. It seems that its no longer possible to replace the whole unit because it is R22.
HE argues that the conversion to 410a would cost TRIPLE, because of course its a whole new unit and he thinks he needs to re-run the line from ground to third floor furnace and may need to demo part of the wall to get the piece inside the furnace. But isn't it short sighted to repair a 13 year old mediocre quality unit that uses a phased out refrigerant? Am i missing something?
He did also mention 410a may be phased out over the next 5-7 years also.
