My home is 14 years old and the builders furnace is in need of replacement. I have 3 inch PVC (foam core) vent and intake which the building inspector says will no longer pass code requirements. Unfortunately the pipe runs 20 feet over a family room finished ceiling and is supported by 'J' hooks every 4 feet.
I have 2 estimates and replacing these pipes is running $x and doesn't include fixing the holes they will cut in the ceiling, so another $?? for patching.
I talked to the building inspector and was told that's the code.
I asked if I could run a 2 inch solid PVC inside of the 3 inch, the 2 inch would easily meet the furnace specs. The inspector said he didn't know and left me hanging. I don't why it would be a problem, 1/2 inch extra room in the pipe, it's supported, and the exhaust gases are in the 110 degree range so temps inside the pipe would be well with reason.
If anyone has any comments on using 2 inch inside of a 3 inch, or any ideas in general on how I can work this problem I would appreciate it.
Sad this is I have a water heater that's also getting old, and that also is vented across the same finished ceiling.
