Trane PTAC unit will run for anywhere from 10 to 30 min, then trip the ground fault switch on the cord at the outlet. Does this in both heating and cooling. Owner says they have to let it sit a while, then hit the reset button and it will restart. Any ideas?

A megger is a device that connect to the compressor and send voltage through the winding to check the resistance.

I have had this problem before but with under counter reach-ins at coffee kiosks at supermarkets. Sparky installs a GFI for the reach-in and works with no problems for 2-3 years. Than it starts tripping the GFI. I find no shorts, leaking capacitors, or any high resistance path to ground. Plug the reach-in in a non-GFI recepticle and the unit runs 24/7 with out any problems. I have sparky install a new GFI and problem goes away. If you are not showing anything shorted, change the GFI. They do go bad.
