Popping sound heard in/around blower unit

Just bought a home in FL and am hearing a popping sound coming from the blower... it sounds just like those little bang snaps you can throw that pop/explode on contact.

The blower unit is in the garage. It is a Trane Model TWE049E13FB2 manufactured in 2005. It has a Perfect Fit Dual Filtration Electronic Air Cleaner System, and also a UV filter.

I was in the garage looking things over and noticed that when it makes the pop sound the power indicator light on the Electronic Air Cleaner blinks. So, assuming it 's that, I shut off the elec air cleaner... no popping since.

Does anyone know why it would be making a popping sound. Looks pretty simple to clean, I think I will try that next.

I have never owned what is to me such a complex air handling system. I am used to the ole 3-month replaceable filter routine - simplicity! How and how often to I need to perform maintenance on this thing? And most importantly, what is that popping? Until I figure that out, I will leave that thing shut off for fear of it being an electrical problem. Any advice at all is greatly appreciated!

if there is something big stuck between the plates or the plates are bent they will zap. I take the door off and push in the safety contact with a plastic tool and see if the spark is in one general area. The fan must be on and the darker the better.
