My outside Compressor unit needs to be replaced - Its an 11 YO Trane heat pump, 3.5 ton. and it is not working...

my house is about 2100 sf in HOTA$$ san antonio, TX

I think the air handler and internal coils are OK, but will defer to the pro judgement?

What would you reccomend?

Does Brand Matter?

Worth it to go to the 14 (or higher) SEER?

what is non scroll vs scroll?

Do I care what refridgerant it uses?

Thanks for the help - sorry i was so antsy, but it is HOT in my house and my wife is not happy about it...

anyway, the verdict is in...

i got two contractors to look at it...

Option 1 - repair - one guy says compressor, other guy says reversing valve and blower fan - both guys say this is a temp fix and probably will lead to further issues later.

Option 2 - Replace entire outside unit - one guy says Ruud other guy says Carrier/Payne - first guy says this is also temp fix because inside/outside units wont match and we'll be changing freon in and out with summer/winter changes so he reccomends option 3. Second guy said replacing carrier with carrier/Payne will not be mismatched and not cause issues.

Option 3 - Replace entire system

I've lived in the house since 2001 (it was built in 1998) and will probably be there another 5 years or so (maybe not that long). I'm leaning to Option 2 with guy #2 - replacing carrier outside unit with carrier/payne outside unit.

If the inside coil and air handler need to be replaced, I can have that done later....

any comments??
