New to the forum, looking to replace my systems in my home. I have as split level house in Southeast PA with almost 30 year old York split (2) systems, one for main floor and the other for second and third. They are each 2 ton systems and the downstairs compressor failed end of last session, upstairs air exchanger needed service for ice on the coils and leaks in 2015. Upstairs has worked fine since, but future is not clear and I can get some savings if I replace both systems at once.
I am trying to do this as economically as possible but don't want to be stupid about it. Regulating temperature in the 3rd is difficult and it remains too hot much of the time. I have considered putting single stage / single speed system downstairs but upgrading to single stage / variable speed air exchanger upstairs.
Question is does this make sense and will the variable speed exchanger work to even out the temperatures between the 2nd and 3rd floors? We are also planning to relocate the registers (ceiling mounted) to improve airflow across 3rd floor room.
I have had 4 installers through the house who have provided quotations that range from low of about $ for basic system to replace just the lower level system, to about $. To replace both at once is gaining me about 20% overall cost reduction and I can do the standard 16 SEER 2 ton downstairs, a variable speed 18.5 SEER system upstairs for about an extra $ over doing the same standard system up and down ($ vs $ for both systems - LuxAire LX series units including 10 year parts \ 5 year labor)
Is it worth it or will the the 3rd floor just always be hotter?
Thanks
