We have a 2-ton Bryant heat pump system with the "FB" series air handler. It is now about 14 years old.
When we replace it, I'd like to buy a variable speed air handler (fan coil).
However, the current unit is only about 14.5 inches wide, and there is not too much extra clearance in its current location.
All the major manufacturers seem to require wider cabinets (>17") to house a variable speed blower.
So, who makes the narrowest indoor fan units on the market?
Assuming we need to bump up a little in size (to get, say, a Carrier FE unit),
what other sizing "gotchas" should I be looking for? For instance, if the current system is correctly sized at 2 tons (actually, it seems to be undersized), are my returns likely to be too small to support a 2-stage system (1.5 / 3 ton) in "high" mode?
(I'm trying to narrow down the possibilities before I call too many contractors
to come out here).
