McDonald's Cornelius Automated Beverage System (ABS) cup pulling problems?

I work at mcdonalds and we have the ABS at the drive-thru. It's a really nice machine but it would be 10x better if it worked properly. On a normal day, it works just fine. The grabber pad goes up to pull the cup, pulls the cup down onto the conveyor, and then makes the drink. But on the busy day, that's when we run into problems. While putting ice in another cup that's already on the conveyer, the grabber pad will go up to pull the next cup, grab onto the cup, and then let go, never pulling anything but air onto the conveyer, as if the cup is too heavy for it to pull down. (Which it's not.) It seems like an internal problem with our particular machine, and once again, it only occurs while it's putting ice into another drink. This causes so many problems because no cup means that the ice and drink go down the drain, and when we're busy and the machine is left un-attended and this occurs, it causes us to manually remake the drink which causes it to get caught behind all of the other customers drinks who aren't even at the first window yet. I don't want to park a car just because of a drink! And not only is it wasting when the ice a beverage go down the drain, but it means no one can leave the machine un-attended, which in my opinion destroys the whole purpose of the machine. It's supposed to make the drinks while I go make the Oreo mcflurry or the chocolate shake, or the iced mocha. It's annoying. Does anyone know of a fix for this?

Fire the machine.

That does not seem to be a heating or cooling machine so why do you inquire here on hvac-talk?

Sounds like time to call for service.

I repair the ice machines on top of the abs system, but I believe you would call Coca-Cola to fix the actual abs itself.

The damn Oreo McFlurry distraction....I hate it when that happens

I think those things are pneumatic.

You can hear them hiss when they move.

If it fails while doing two functions at the same time, maybe its got low air pressure or some kind of pneumatic problem?

Ours makes that air noise too, that I was curious about when the machine was first installed. Our grabber pad will sometimes lag/freeze when we get busy as well. the boss refuses to call for service because she thinks the entire unit needs to be replaced.

Tell her to charge it to the capital budget. That way it doesn't come out of her bonus, which is why she sent you here looking for information.

So far as I know Wendy's doesn't have those problems.

Seriously though, doesn't Coca-Cola give you guys free phone technical support, and won't they send a tech out for a reasonable price or even maybe for free?

I wish.. Apparently the warranty only covers problems that occur under "normal usage." ... It's been behaving this way for as long as I can remember, but some of my coworkers say that it behaved correctly when it was new. I'm not sure exactly what happened to make it behave this way.

I will see what I can do. It seems as if I'm the only manager that cares about this issue. It was once discussed in a meeting, but never addressed because of costs.

I could never understand why some people are so cheap. They spend thousands of dollars on a piece of equipment, but when it breaks they don't even want to call someone to come and look at it.

You may want to check the air pressure to the unit. Both the ice gate solenoid and the cup grabber run off air pressure. If the pressure is too low that may be the cause when trying to do both actions at the same time like opening the ice gate and pulling down a cup.
Also clean or replace the grabber pads on the cup grabber arms. If they are dirty they wont grab properly.
Also check the stainless steel fingers in the cup holder tubes. If they are bent the will put to much pressure on the cups so they cant always be pulled out or to little and they pull our more than one.
These machines work great when they are clean...and they rarely are! But everything has to be in sync or they can be a pain.

Was just dirty distro tubes.
Actually got them to stop using the ice in the bin so I could clean that thing. Wish it was a mani or hoshi. That cme quiet machine stinks. Cups were still flying out the window though.
Also the condenser coils were all chewed up from the co who power washes with chemicals vs a easy back washing. Gonna be a issue if it ever warms up. 2002 units.

HGV is in the head
three lines with a boat load of quick connects!!!!!
Had to look at their doubled up condenser too. They bolt 2 compressor sections with quick connects on either side of the shared condenser coil/fan

I looked now for the manual for the pics but can't find any old manuals for some reason on their web sight. They just have the new stuff.
