We have about a 3300 sq foot home that has 2 heating and air units. One side of the house where the living/dining and kitchen areas are appears to work correctly. However the other side of the home where our bedrooms are at appears to not be working correctly. We turned on the A/C for the season and I have noticed ever since we bought the house, the side were the bedrooms are located, the air conditioning unit out side runs for almost hours at a time while the other side where the kitchen is kicks on and off at a normal time frame.
Right now I have both thermostats set at 78 degrees, the unit for the bedrooms is consistently running. It is about 90 degrees out side right now and the bedroom area thermostat says its 78 degrees but won't go any lower than that. Since we bought the house I noticed that the front bedrooms and closets are warmer then our master bedroom. There are 2 return vents, one located by the front warm are bedrooms filter size 14X14X1 and one vent directly in our master bedroom size 10X10X1. This last winter we had to have the heater replaced on the bedroom side because the burner box was cracking. The old unit was a janitrol, and the contractor replaced it with a ruud unit. We did not replace the outside unit which is a janitrol also and is original to the home. I have cleaned the outside unit coils to see if that helps the issue and recently changed the air filters.
Is this a return vent issue with them not being big enough or an outside unit issue or a home insulation issue? I am at a loss and don't want to spend un-necessary money since we just had to spend a lot of money for the heater unit replacement.
I have a infrared thermometer, I measured the temp at the vents here are the results below:
with thermostat set at 78 degrees the room temp says it is 79-80 degrees:
Furthest front room with only 1 vent: 66.0
2nd front bedroom with only 1 vent: 61.5
air return vent near front 2 bedrooms: 74.0
air return vent in master bedroom: 71.5
master bedroom with 2 vents: 62.5 and 63.5
As I have been typing this message, i have been home for almost 30 minutes, the both thermostats have been set at 78 degrees while at work, the bedroom unit has not shut off and the other kitchen unit has cycled 2 times so far.
