i've heard that a standalone 'instant hot water' heater may be a better option for DHW than an indirect working with a modcon gas boiler. any truth to this? i'm getting close to a decision, and was thinking it may prove better to have a separate DHW in my 4 br ranch, than running the new gas boiler all year long for dhw.

Personally I wouldn't use the boiler unless you were going to use an indirect storage tank and set the boiler up with priority.

You don't have to use a "instant hot water" system (tankless).
You could also just put in a standard 50 gallon stand alone.

All three of which are significantly different in price.

i'm guessing the standalone would be the most to run, but cheapest to buy. i presently have a 50 gal oil fired HWH and it makes plenty of hot water, but it does have to keep a lot of water hot. the indirect (favored by most installers) seemed the best way, until now. afterall, the life of the boiler would have to be less if its asked to work all year long to produce heat as well as hot water. i'll have to check the pricing for a tankless, which seems the best idea, but never mentioned by one installer as an option. ???
and thanx smoke for your opinion, but what would you choose, assuming price was not a concern?
