Hi there, we got a new heating/AC system installed in April. I live in Massachusetts. Is it a law to have someone from the town come and inspect the unit after install is done? We never got a copy of the permits or confirmation the inspection was done. Now I’m worried it was overlooked because no one came back once the company left the day install was done. It was a two day job.

And they magically poofed disappeared into thin-air 🤔
?. It is a holiday weekend and both the town hall and the hvac company permits department are closed for 3 days so I cannot confirm. My question was if it’s a law to have a city/town inspection after install. They pulled permits so I’m thinking it is. I don’t know why no one followed up with us.

Do you have a copy of the pulled permit ?
I found proof on the town website that there was a permit pulled. It still says “open”. Although I realize maybe those sites might not be updated. I actually saw our water heater that the previous owner installed 4 months before we moved in still says “open” and that was 3 years ago. But I don’t think we have a paper copy of the permit. My husband handled it all. I’m just wondering if maybe the company was organized and scheduled the town to come on the last day of install and my husband just didn’t know…he said there was always multiple people in and out over the two days.

Around here there is no inspection needed if you are just installing like-for-like equipment.

But since they pulled a permit I assume a final inspection is needed.

Do you know what time frame they have to complete an inspection or does it depend on the town? It’s been almost 9 months

Not sure. But I would assume that anytime after it is complete up to maybe a year. Since normal install warrantee is 1 year. That way if there is a code violation it would be covered under the warrantee period. Otherwise you may have to pay a fee to the contractor or another contractor to make corrections.

Also to note, that if you do not get it signed off by the code inspector it may impact the value of the house if you decide to sell. That would depend on how strict code enforcement is in your area. But you could probably check on that. Someone buying your house might be a little wary of their safety if there was some code violation that was not corrected.
