For standing seam I would take a real hard look at Sheffield's Cool/R line. Really excellent reflectivity and emissivity numbers. I always choose their Solar White. Usually in aluminum but steel performs as well thermally and costs a bit less.

For service I would like to have at least 24" on all sides of every piece of equipment.

Using 60" length for the air handling units - NOT including ducts - would be conservative enough.

Hello and thanks for any help offered here.

Summary of my question: how much physical space is required for the indoor parts of the HVAC system that will be housed in a mechanical room on the second floor of a new home being built?

We are in the process of designing our new home with an architect. I’m planning on having a second story mechanical room with space for two HVAC systems instead of putting them in the very hot attic (we live in Texas).

Here are some details:

First story is about 1775 sq ft with 10 ft ceilings
Second story is about 1100 sq ft with 9 ft ceilings
Standing seam white or silver metal room to reflect more sunlight and absorbing less solar energy.
Exterior walls built with Omni Block. Because of its thermal mass properties, Omni Block homes typically require about 35% less AC tonnage than traditional builds.
I’m planning on installing both supply and return ducts in each room.

At this point my plan is to have two systems mounted horizontally, one above the other. The one on top will duct up for the second story, and the bottom down for the first floor.

From the research I’ve done, it looks like the front to back dimension would probably be up to about 30 inches. The horizontal, end to end distance is something I haven’t been able to figure out, and why I’m here seeking help. Are we talking 10 ft, 12 ft, 14ft, etc.? There will need to be space on each end of the systems for ducts but that’s in addition to however long the hardware is.

I’m very grateful for any help offered and I’m very open to any suggestions anyone has regarding anything I mentioned here.

Thank you!

Martin
