I hope the compressor just got hot and opened, I checked for resistance thru all three legs and it is open. Compressor was pretty hot to the touch, I waited about 1 hour and still no luck @ about 60 degrees and windy as heck. Last one I had out on over load I could hose off and it took like 15 minutes if I remember right. This was on a roof with no water. I go back first thing in the morning, got my fingers crossed.

I have gone to a gas station and gotten a bag of ice to put on top of the compressor .

On the tag of the compressor many times it gives the time in minutes that it takes the overload to close. I don't know at what ambient they base the time at.

Next time ( if the compressor is in the airstream ) disconnect the compressor from the contactor and capacitor and turn on the unit letting the condenser fan pull the outdoor air across the compressor hook up your ohms meter and monitor. Certainly if it does not close in the time your there then check the following day . You can also disconnect the blower relay if you do not want to circulate air downstairs.

If there is a hose nearby, run it on the compressor. I've found that usually does the trick within a few minutes. If not it could take a couple of hours or possibly over night. But by all means never condemn a hot compressor. It will cool down and almost definitely run again.

This a single phase compressor? I thought on single phase start to run should always have resistance, but anything to common should be open as the switch breaks common...I am not 100% sure, just mention it because I waited overnight and came back to find it still didn't start..

I had one that I hosed for 25-30 min. until it was cool to the touch. The overload would not reset. I hit it with dead blow. No reset. I told homeowner I'd return the next day and test again before condemning the compressor. Next day. It had reset. Sometime that internal heat in the windings can take a while to cool down.

they should not all be open.

YUP.
R-S should be conductive.Single phase is C-Thermal o'load protected.

Only if it's "burnt" and you open it up.:stinks:

Anytime you have a comp cycling on internal o'load it's not good but that is why they have them. If it's just a "short" time there is generally not a problem and "most" go on for a long life. When you get it back running, smell the gas or do an acid test and that will give you an idea.Yeah I know,Saftey first but I'm old and know when to stop.:grin2:

Me to.20 yrs now.Figure of speech about getting old.
We had a HP pkg unit change out a week ago on a Dr's farm residence behind some "fancy" shrubbery and were "expected" to lift it over them.
Mexican hired hand was cutting back the crepe mertyl's and I went over to him and asked if they had a tractor with a front end loader.Yes.Strap's?Yes. Come on and get it.The rest of the day was exceptional.
