I've been reading the posts on this forum for a few weeks and have the information very informative.
I am actively shopping for a new system. My current 100,000 btu gas furnace is 25 years old and the 2 ton air conditioning unit is 15. I live in a 70 year old Northern Virginia duplex with approximately 1100 sq ft of finished space (1st floor, 2nd floor, finished attic space).
I have had 5 contractors visit me and their proposals are all over the map. A couple did not perform load calculations so they were eliminated from consideration. Another, after performing a load calc, suggested installing a Carrier Infinity Series 58MVC 60,000 BTU furnace with a 2 ton 25HPA6 heat pump and the Infinity thermostat. Another contractor performed a load calc and also came up with 60,000 btus and 2 tons but told me that wouldn't be enough to keep me comfortable. He suggested staying with 100,000 btus.
It seems everybody has a different idea on what to do and I'm not sure who to believe. Any suggestions are much appreciated.
