I want to make sure that I do this right before I commit to this system.

I'm concerned about the coil that's listed on my contract. It's copper but not tin plated (Carrier 3.5 Ton Performance Series Cased N-Coil. Puron Model CNPHP4221). My rep said that the tin plated is only used for high humidity areas (which I'm not in). Is this true? Should I spend more money and special order one or am I okay with this one?

Under programmable thermostat, it's listed as a Carrier PS701...is this okay or should I ask for a Honeywell, and if so, which one?

When do they show you the Manual J/D...before you sign the contract or after?

My proposed system is a:

Carrier Infinity Series Variable Speed Furnace Model #58CVX-090116.

Carrier 3.5 Ton Performance Series Condensing Unit Model 24APA542

I need to get this A/C in ASAP. We're currently without anything and are approaching 100 degree plus weather.

Manual J should have been the basis for sizing the system and generating the quote. I would sign nothing on the basis of a guess!!! Did they actually perform the Manual J or are they just trying to keep all the details from you until you commit to the job?

A lot of time is invested in a Manual J so I could understand they wouldn't want to give you all the data that you could use with another contractor. Beside that you really don't need all the details but you should get all your questions answered.

You might want to edit out the price before the mods catch you.

Yikes!

That's it, an AC and VS (90%+?) furnace? How many contractors did you talk to? I had some off the wall proposals. But I talked to 5-6 contractors with different manufacturers and the spread was amazing, easily a third difference high to low.

I don't advocate low price as a selection criteria, but talking to a variety of dealers can get you a pretty low price with excellent equipment, maybe even some that you were never familiar with before.

I had a Manual J from our electric co-op testing before proposals. I originally asked all to do a Manual J. Some did, some didn't. Wisdom from this forum suggested paying somebody to do it or like me using an existing Manual J for proposals. The selected proposal should be willing to do one after you tell him he is selected. Wouldn't sign anything first though.

davefr,

Thanks for the heads up...I made the edit.

Regarding the Manual J/D, my impression from him is that he took all my info and made all the notes when he came out to see me. He said that he's doing the numbers but he's done so many homes in my area and my set up is nothing special, the houses are all very similar.

I'm more concerned about the tin plated copper coil and the thermostat. What are your thoughts on those?

I must be doing something right.
I never list coil numbers, m/n on my proposals, maybe i need to work on that. Then again all my work is referral so i guess they trust the people who referred me.
Oh yeah then i get more referrals.:)

Ask your friends , look up a local bni group online if your that worried. You do not need a big company to get great service or installs done right. We go the extra mile and then some.

I've gotten at least 10 quotes over the last 3 months from large, medium and small sized companies. Some were very low, some were very high and the majority were smack in the middle. This one was in the lower middle.

I'm really concerned about the tin plated copper coil vs the copper coil and the thermostat. Any thoughts on those?

I like copper coils myself, but i dont necessarily have a problem with the others.
im sorry i cant help you with the stat , if you have concerns ask about the White Rodgers touchscreen or the honeywell, both are good stats.
