Hi I have a FV4C indoor unit & 25HNH outdoor unit (Carrier Heat pump). Today there is a louder than normal low-pitched vibrating/humming sound that is coming from the indoor unit. Actually, it's hard to say, maybe it is coming from the outdoor unit and being piped into the indoor unit? Due to the 10F-20F weather today, it has been running most of the day, but the hum sometimes quits for an hour and the indoor machine does not sound like it is in an "intense" mode. The heat pump is still working but the sound is really annoying to me and I am concerned it might be something getting ready to break. But if I call out a service-person I am afraid it will be in its stage of no hum for an hour. Is there a way for them to thoroughly test/quiet it even without the hum present? Thanks.

Can you take a video of the outdoor unit when all the commotion is going on?

It would help. Is your home staying warm?

Yes included is the video. The heat is working perfectly. The noise is new, louder than I have ever heard, and annoying.

And here is the indoor unit:

Although it may not sound like it from the videos, it is louder than the outdoor unit.

7 years old. It has always heated perfectly. The loud vibration hum just started Monday at 5:00am. It can be heard throughout the house. I am concerned about the clanking, but I am not annoyed by it. I am not sure when it started, because I don't hear it inside the house, and it is located in a place where no one typically is. I don't think I heard it last year and I know it hasn't been around from day one. I don't think I have a crankcase heater, never heard of that before. Thank you.

That's outside of the norm but heat-
pumps make strange noises when it's
real cold.

Make sure you have a clean filter in the system. If you make the call for service they can view your video and it will help their diagnosis.

How warm do you keep your home?

Hello, the service guy came out, heard the clanking and checked the pressure. As soon as he checked the pressure, the metal clanking stopped. I thought big deal, that is not the noise issue. Then he went inside and the air handler was whisper quiet. I told him to wait 15 minutes, but it still stayed quiet. He didn't seem too interested in helping me with the issue, because everything tested fine on the unit itself, basically saying that heat pumps make noise. I tried to convey it was louder than normal and fills up my entire house to no avail. About an hour after he left it gradually went back up in noise. The clanking returned on the outside, definitely seems like the two are related. I am at my wits end. Anyone have any ideas to try, or is loud noise with heat pumps just something to live with? I did some research and saw something called "discharge line mufflers" but I have no idea if they would help or not. Seems like a fix as this is a scroll compressor and the pulsating vibrations seem to get worse after continuous use and get amplified in the air handler. But I didn't find any real information on whether they do help or not. (and this would be something to suggest to the service tech if it is a good idea) Thanks.

Hello pecmsg, I am a home owner with no HVAC experience, so I probably am speaking incorrectly. The tech took out a tool and hooked it into the lines, read the numbers, and said they are correct. No refrigerant was needed.
