My heat pump has recently started making random clicking noises while operating. I'm sure professional service is required. My question is, does this sound like a major issue that demands immediate attention or is it something that could probably wait a month or so for me to financially recover from Christmas? Link to video of unit making noise is below. Many thanks.

PS..Because I'm a newb, the forum wont let me post the full link...sorry.

Try running it in cool mode ( I mean guessing it’s running in heat mode ) to see if it makes the noise, and try to catch it while it’s in defrost, when the OD fan is off. Look closely at the fan blade when it’s off to make sure it’s has not been rubbing on anything. Free spin it. Possible it’s a fan blade end touching metal, as the compressor seems to run at a constant sound level?

IMO, I’d probably call for service sooner than later, hopefully you get a honest Contractor.

May be a relay? May have to listen more closely to particular areas, such as by the electrical panel, or by the reversing valve coil, OD metering device. Etc. as it seems to happen in heat mode as you seem to mention. Heat works OK?

I still would call for service, should be able to diagnose ( if it’s constantly doing in heat mode only ) somewhat quickly, costing you one hour labor plus trip charge and labor tax. From then on who knows. Recommend a company versed in Heat Pump service, and as stated you get a honest person who can tell you the real cause of your clicking sound, without saying you need a new system, or charges you for more parts than needed, or it takes several call backs before the root cause is actually found.

Don’t you have a contact person already?

Unit is both heating and cooling fine, just making the clicking noise when the heat is on. I do have a couple of trustworthy options for service. I'll contact them after the holidays. Thanks for the good advice and have a Merry Christmas!

Turns out, the evaporator coil in my Bryant furnace is completely rusted over and leaking refrigerant from the little copper pipes. Was told the lack of refrigerant is what was causing the clicking noise. Unit is 6 years old but because I didn't know to register it within 90 days, my 10 year warranty is void. Cost to replace the evaporator was estimated at $. Not happy about this situation. Moral of the story - Register your unit's warranty or pay the price!

Yes, unfortunately that happens frequently. You get a double whammy, as the compressor has no warranty either.
