Of course it's going to go into a vacuum if the discharge is cut off. It's not any different than a pump down system. But some of the Copeland scrolls won't allow that to happen. I've come across them when removing condensing units and trying to pump them down. They'll get to about 20psig then internally bypass.

Why would it pump down? The pressure relief is internal. Anyway the rv's never block any port completely when they stick unless he's got some oddball rv on there.
If there is no discharge gas leaving how could it not pump down until the relief opens. Some will pump down I've come across them running in a vacuum.
I'm not sure how many different types or styles there are and looking at this particular one you are correct would still appear to leave a bypass.

Is there no true suction port ? I'll have to reread the thread. How about a model number ? I know most heat pumps with reciprocating compressors have a accumulator but scrolls not so much.
