I would say a lot have guys have learned the trade doing just that. I worked with a tech as a helper when I first started out in the trade. That only lasted 3 months and I was out running calls on my own. You control how fast you grow in this business. I would say soak up as much info as you can, Do some RSES online training, go to as many local manufacture training classes you can, and find some Sr. Techs that don't mind you giving them all call when your stuck. Just make sure you use proper practices otherwise your doing the customer an injustice. Go for it!
