Ok, Not a fun thing to do but what is the best way to give a notice of leaving a current employer?

Short and sweet ?

Long and drawn out?

E mail ?

In person?

Over the phone ?

Please help with some ideas that will make it easier

Tell him staight up in person, and give at least 2 weeks notice. Think about it this way...How would you like to hear it.....YOU'RE FIRED, LEAVE NOW...or I've got to let you go, but you can work for the next two weeks while you find another job. Mutual respect.

plan on being fired at the end of the conversation, but do it in person and give two weeks, if he fires you then and there, you now who the better person is.

over the phone, e-mail, a message, having somone else do it is a coward!!!! Think of it the way you used to break up with an old girlfriend!!! (maybe that last part was a bad idea)

Good advice above, I've seen people burn bridges and it come back to bite them in the butt.

No one should begrudge you for trying to better yourself, and if they do, you won't have to work the 2 weeks in what can be an awkward atmosphere.

I guess it depends on the company. My last boss would stop by every day and pick me up for work. Apartment boilers change outs so we always worked together. Some days he was late and I would be sitting there for a hour waiting other days he would be early. My last day working for him I was waiting for over 2 hours and finally phoned him to see what time he was coming. He said he didn't need me anymore and that he was going to use his laid off brother in-law. All he wanted to know was how much he owed me.

We still talk every once in awhile when we run into each other. He even phoned me the other day looking for help that he needs with a 410A system because he has no gauges or knowledge of how to set the system up.
Yes the student becomes the teacher:D

Now the company I work for now. Well a tech went in to give his 2 week notice and they asked him to call his wife to come pick him and his tools up and to bring his uniforms he had at home with her. That was nice.

I agree, be a stand up guy, look him in the eye, give him 2 weeks notice if he lets you go right there, you're the better man. If you work out the 2 weeks look him in the eye shake his hand and you'll have his respect, he'll always talk good about you, and you didn't burn any bridges.

JMHO...........;)

Personally,I'm in the camp of an in-person 2 week notice. It's the fair way to do it.1 time I was told you can just be done now. That kinda ticked me off, because I was always on time, worked late, etc and felt like he could have let me finish 2 weeks. Some people think-"hey,they wont give me a 2 week notice when they fire me" Just remember-the toes you step on today, might be connected to the ass you gotta kiss tomorrow.

Put in writing and hand it to the boss as well as give him/her a verbal.
One time I worked for a guy that had a problem with my brother in law.
After they let him go they started in on me.I went home cleaned out my van, grabbed all of my uniforms, and parked the van in front of his house.
If I didn't do it that way he would of charged me for all of the A.T.500
training and trips to St Louis.Glad I got my last pay check before I did it or he would have tried to keep it.

I have been on 2 of those trips to St.Louis. They didn't ask me if I wanted to go they told me when I was leaving. So I would not think they would ask for any re-payment of something they sent me on by their choice but then you never know with big companys.

My old boss always pulled stuff like that.Ex coworkers had to take him to the labor board over crap like that.

If he fires you, then you get to collect unemployment for 2 weeks.

I am in the camp of giving two weeks, talk to them and explian the situation i.e moving on to better grounds. I my last place I worked at did that and they decided to let me go that day so I emptied my truck I came in on friday and turned in my uniforms and picked up my last check. I offered to stay the full 2 weeks. I called up new job and I started on Monday took one day off and went to work for a buddy of mine helping him run commercial calls since he was out of town.

I just switched companies a month ago, after giving 7 weeks notice. The company I left had treated me well and had me scheduled for training for a big project that was starting near the same time i was planning on leaving. It wasnt really a matter of burning a bridge but I really didn't wanna leave them scrambling. The bad side was they had time to try to change my mind.I got the offer of more money, more vacation....new van.Maybe I'm flawed in my logic but I think if they had all that to offer....i shoulda been hearing about it before I threatened to quit.

Ding, Ding, Ding, Ding, Ding, Ding, Ding, Ding, Ding, Ding.

That's a FACT! Amazing what a company can come up with when a good guy is leaving.

Definately put it in writting. That is number 1. Next, you have to do it in person. It certainly is not easy, but once you are through it, its over. That being said, give them 2 or more weeks, but it is possible you will have to go then. It is their choice then. If they let you go right there, you can tell them since you are giving notice (which is in writting) that you will expect to be paid the rest of the two weeks. Good luck.

Well the big day finally happened, I have asked alot of questions on here lately and i wanted to say thanks for all he help during a strange-rough time.

Lost alot of sleep lately and finally got the nerv up to call my boss and talk to him, i wantewd to meet with him in the morning face to face , he declined and said he was busy so i started to tell him well then ok i need to give to my notice but wanted to do it in person, and i can give you a full 2 weeks..

He was very matter of fact kinda pissed asked why , ect ect 30 sec later we were off the phone, and he said he would p/u the truck in the a/m..

Took the wife and kids out to the store and come home 2 hours later and my truck is gone..

Called him up, he was mad it was dirty and asked for my helpers ph #
So I give it to him and they talk, he went over there and took he truck and fired him cause his truck was dirty, didnt ley him know or take anything off the truck....just took it...

To make a long story short i quit , he fired my helper and then another tech called him and quit all in the same day and it wasnt planned ......so a crew of 5 went to 2 in one day

Anyways thats not what i wanted to have happen but its on him . not me i wanted to be professional and do the right thing , but now im glad and i know i did the right thing

Sorry to carry on, but thanks for all the help guys
