My outside fan quit working. A tech came out today and replaced the fan motor. A couple of hours later my thermostat started smoking and burnt up melting the plastic and leaving a mark on the wall. The tech did a shoddy job of wiring the new fan motor. The owner said it was wired to code with the wires sticking up out of the cage? Anyhow, could the new fan motor in any way be related to the smoke tstat?

I know that won't cause the issue. I was wondering if there is anything in the outside unit that could feed back to the main system if something were done wrong. I just showed the picture to highlight the shoddy workmanship. These guys have terrible reviews but I have to use who my home warranty company sends.

:ditto:

The issue is most likely the low voltage wiring touching high voltage wiring.

Have you contacted them to come back out and look at this issue?
He is coming in the morning. Where are those wire located? In the fan unit? Near the outdoor control board? Thank you for your help.

I am sure he knows that. I am curious for myself. As a 25 year Navy Electronics Tech I always like to know how things work and what went wrong when they don't work.

Tech is here

Measured the voltage at the Tstat. 120vac. Went into the attic and found control board to be fried, sending hi voltage to tstat and outside unit. He is going to shoot for a brand new unit from warranty company since this unit is so old and starting to fail part by part. Which is the whole reason I have kept the home warranty. This will be great too because my drip pan started to rust through this summer and has ruined my dining room ceiling. I was just waiting for it to get cool enough to go up there and try to seal it.

I have only lived here 2 years. The unit was old when I bought the place. I am assuming that sometimes units leak into the secondary condensate pan or there wouldn't be a need for one. Years of this contributed to the rust. You deal with this more than me so I assume you know what kinds of stunts warranty companies try to pull. Just going by common sense though, it doesn't make sense to me. This will be my 3rd time, second with this warranty company getting repairs/replacements. They have tried giving me the run around of course, but I have always been the squeaky wheel. I am hoping that things go smoothly. I do not expect it, but I am hoping.

I also want to add that I know the home warranties are not the best. But being a disabled vet who also had to take in my disabled mother to take care of, I don't have $7-$10k or more sitting around to replace my unit. It was a gamble. I knew the unit was old and would need replaced so I paid $50 a month assuming it would need replaced before the cost of the warranty exceeded the cost of a unit out of pocket. I would definitely rather hire the best, get it fixed in a day or 2 and just stroke a check. But life circumstances being what they are, does not afford me that opportunity.
The tech found the problem...maybe they caused it to begin with. Now I just cross my fingers and hope for the best.
Thank you for all of the advice.

But if they replaced one for me last year why would I have a better chance of hitting the lottery?
I have been but not currently am a member of the VFW and Legion. Could you give me info on the programs they offer to replace a unit in case I crap out with the warranty company?
If you would like you can email me at*******
And if you have any tips for hitting the lottery I'll take those too! lol

Great news! The warranty company approved a new unit, both condenser and handler. They have me listed as an emergency case and put a priority on it.

Thanks everyone for your advice.
