Grocery W/I Freezer
WITT
M/n: IFG24-325-D
Low Temp. 404A
Defrost term: 55F
Failsafe:24 minutes
Interval: Every 8 hours
Coil: Clear!

Seems about once a month the guards are forming ice at the 3 and 9 o'clock position. Enough ice to stop the blade! Anyone ever experience this?

I would start by watching for how long the employees leave the door wide open. ;)

First try setting the failsafe longer.

I had a store with this problem and after much investigating, it was determined the problem only happened after stocking the freezer. When the doors were open for hours straight, coil would freeze into a block of ice and the the standard defrost time wasn't enough to fully defrost the coil and trip the fan delay/termination stat. adding 20 minutes to the failsafe time fixed the problem.

Sounds like a monthly friend...

I have the exact same problem with one of my stores. Witt coils here too. (shocker?)
Customer won't even try to keep the door opening to a minimum, so I haven't bothered to go through and test all the fan delay switches. I've seen nothing to indicate that my fan delay switches aren't working, but I have seen that door stay open for hours. Every day. They think about closing it back up when the temperature alarm goes off(its on a 2 hour delay), but only if they're done messing around in there.

A door issue would lead me to assume there would be condensation/frost/ice around the door and entrance to the box.

But just frost/ice on the fan guards would make me look at the fan delay.

whore frost

on pull through evap. coils the drain pipe must have a trap in it. Warm moist air can be pulled back up the pipe and freeze on the fan guards.
