I have been in residential A\c and heating for 6 years, i know how to do a proper install with ducts, ID and OD units. Family friend just asked me to do a change out on his 4800 sq ft home on his upstairs unit. I just need a J and D calculation and design to help me out. My question is do NEED a contractors licenses to preform change out? I planned on pulling ALL permits required. May be a dumb question, but i looked everywhere on the internet and could not get answer for it. Thanks!
 
Find out how good of a friend he is before you start the job. Have him sign a contract that he will pay you for all lost wages. Until you recover and can find a new job. If you injure yourself while doing this. Plus all medical bills. So around a $1,000.000.00 home owner insurance policy should cover it. Plus, get him to sign that you aren't responsible for any damage you do to his house. Other wise you would need liability insurance.
 
If YOU enter a building department looking to pull a permit you'll most likely have to have a state license. Now, if the home owner does this the outcome could be different.

In Ca, the Home Owner can pull the permit, you can not, Also be advised the Permit office WILL want to know who is doing the work and they will need a C20...........I'd be glad to do your J and D, but otherwise, you are out of luck with the building department (no only have to have a license, but General liability and Work Comp Waver)
 
Cali you need license (c-20) period. No way to do it yourself legally. Owner could pull permit, hire you as an employee after he pays your WC, SS, UI, ect., just like any other employer. If he doesn't want to do that then your out of luck.
 
Here in Arizona if you do a job like that and make more than x amount of dollars... then you are committing a crime of contracting without a license and the ROC can prosecute you and restitution and range of punishment to include some jail time if you are a serial offender...

unless is your own home or you are doing it for free the penalties and risks are not worth it.

Find a licensed contractor to at least come in and help you like do the manual j and such and you can work out the fees..

If you are a service tech you should apply for pro status..

Thank you for all the information it its vary, vary helpful. Im all about doing it correctly and keeping myself safe. Thank.you guys again. Risk not worth it for me, all tho homeowner seems cool and says he.doesnt care about premit but I do.

Any work over $500 (if I recall) will require a contractors license. You will not be able to pull a permit with a license. The homeowner will be able to pull the permit.

You can contact the California Contractor's License Board for the current up to date info.

So in Cali a licensed contractor can't pull permits, the homeowner has to?
What about new construction or if the customer is commercial property?

Either the homeowner or licensed contractor can pull a permit.

I you are unlicensed you can not pull a permit. So you can get the homeowner to pull one.

Same here but most cities are wise to unlicensed contractors having the homeowner pull the permit. They question homeowner and have them sign an affidavit that their doing the work themselves, and the homeowner is the one that has to meet inspector.

I have applied for two permits, when I got the Building dept all they wanted was my money, they didn't care about Manual J or D, they didn't care if i had insurance (which I have a boat load of) all they wanted was the money.

so like most contractors in New Yorkistan I generally don't go get a permit

Thats been my experience in Ohio. First time I pulled a permit, I walked into the building department and said I don't have a license but need to pull a permit. Lady went shhh don't say that so loud, fill this out. I didn't have insurance or workmans comp either, which is all I needed to get to get my local license. No one around here seems to care about permits either. I've never seen no permit hold up a house sale.
 
Pulling a permit is a scam as they are not a inspection of quality ,they only verify the very basic codes and met if they feel like it . There is no recourse if the inspector misses a code violation
