My son bought a house in April and could not test the A/C. Turns out the ducts run in the attic and are crushed and need to be replace. He has hot water heat. The previous owner put blown in insulation in a month before putting it on the market.
Either the ducts were crushed by the new insulation, or they were damaged before and the insulation was too hide it.

Could blown in insulation crush the ducts?
How else could the ducts have been damaged?

Any help would be much appreciated.

The guy installing the insulation did it. Someone else crushed it, tv guy, internet guy, sparky, homeowner, last hvac guy. Who knows. I’ve only seen ductwork crushed by a person. This is excluding building collapse of course.

all crushed, or just one location.... one close to attic access. Is it metal duct, fiberglass duct or flex?

Surprised (or not) that yours and the banks home inspector did not redline that prior to closing.

A lot of new information

My son got in touch with the insulation installer. He said that the ducts were damaged before he removed the old insulation and he took the photo below to document it. His foreman mentioned it to the home owner, who told him not to worry about it.

I can't make much sense out of the photo. Does it really show a crushed duct? I think maybe it is the thing at the bottom in the middle. Is that right? If not, then what? Thanks.

I'm not sure what that picture is showing. looks like a bunch of garbage up in an attic? In the grand scheme of things I don't think it matters. Like Pnasty said, it would be very hard to prove who crushed it or how long it has been like that. Your son bought the house, it has things that need to be fixed, it's now his problem to get those things fixed.

Any time someone buys something used, they are taking a chance. It comes down to a little thing called "due-diligence". Tell your son that if he doesn't like it, he's always welcome to move back in with you (where the air conditioning is nice and comfortable).

I see uninsulated metal trunk and flex duct that needs an elbow at the take off. Those are not the fault of the insulation contractor.
