I am a new member, but have been reading many of the posts with interest as we have a broken Heil Central AC condenser and it will need to be replaced.

Over the Winter we added approx 600 sqft to our home and the 2.5 ton unit was not sufficient anyway, but finding that it didn't work at all was very dissappointing.

Well long story short, when you have relatives in the business, they may work cheap, but you have to wait at the back of the line. I completely understand that trade-off. In the meantime it hasn't been too bad lately as far as temperature and humidity here in NJ, but it will get bad in a hurry soon.

We have a whole house fan which is good for cool nights, but while we wait for our turn I want to prepare for the hot sticky nights. Our airhandler works fine and after reading UDarrell's webpage about cooling a whole floor with a 6000 btu window unit it got me to thinking that perhaps I could provide some sort of relief for the family by using a window unit and the airhandler to circulate the air and decrease the humidity.

Another problem is that we have casement windows in every room except the family room which is at the end of the house, which is a single story rancher.

Would it be worth a small investment to create a temp fix just to make it through to the new AC install? Would it actually work? One of the returns would be right next to the window where I could install the air conditioner.

Just tell me if it's a silly idea to even consider and if it would work to bring the temp and hum down to even a bearable level, what size unit might be optimal?

Thanks for humoring me. :D

Possible yes.
Predictable. Well, I have family in the crystal ball repair business, and I'm waiting my turn for mine to be fixed. :)
LOL.

Sorry, can't tell you what size you'll need. It should help to get the humidity down, but hard to tell how much.
Also depends if your duct work is in an unconditioned attic or crawlspace.
LOL Thanks. Going to be out your way tomorrow visiting the Sweetest Place on Earth. :)
The duct work is all in the attic. :(

You see my wife has two cousins that have HVAC experience, we unfortunately picked the one with little experience to install this system 7 years ago.

I should have known we were headed for trouble when he consumed a whole brazing rod on the first joint. The "other" cousin came over and cut the 1/2" blockage out of the line and viola the thing actually worked. It just never worked right. The plenumn wasn't designed right and the whole thing never got cold. I know, I know it's not all about cold, but when you walk into other peoples' homes I always just noticed a big difference.

Now with the rash of emergency calls the "other" cousin is swamped and good for him because he has been out on his own for about 2 years and he deserves the business. I want to pay him, but you know how that goes, he won't accept payment and you still are at the back of the line.

I just want a stop-gap solution in the meantime.

Thanks guys for the help and words of advice. I will wait for my wife's cousin to rescue us. I know that I am the computer guy in the family and when their "business" computer suddenly stopped booting I bailed them out and found the problem, which the Geek Squad would have charged up the whazoo if they could have found it all.

I will do the sweaty part and he can light it up. Thank God it has been cool "so far". We also have the vinyl swimming pond too.

Thanks again.
