Hello All i just wanted to know when a new compressor is installed in say a Goodman unit do the compressor bolts need to be torqued to the mounting plate? There are small rubber insulators under each mounting stud i really just want to know if those nuts that hold the compressor need to be toruqed down? Thanks so much!

Just tight. Nothing special.

Qucik question Compressor mounting bolts

We have a new Goodman unit about a year old guy was over today to check everything out--How ever he loosened the 4 compressor bolts stating that they were too tight?? Really LOL They were tight as the compressor sits on 4 rubber bushings.. Dont understand the logic?? Just wondering if anyone has heard of this before? Thanks so much!

So at first it was a compressor was replaced.
Now it’s a new unit and he showed up and said the bolts needed to be loosened.

Seriously, what in the heck is up with these new users joining, creating a weird post, asking questions only a engineer would ask, about a make believe situation.

Then, when they don’t get the answer they want, they create a new thread, with a different set of circumstances, with the same question just clearly attempting to be hidden.

I think this came in full force with that one weird guy that was going on about refrigerant oil evaporation rates.

I truly believe that the oil guy and all these other threads like this are one in the same.

I think you can use a proxy or something to prevent the mods from seeing multiple accounts via the same IP?

Unless you mispoke and meant a new unit as a whole, and not a compressor as a unit, and I’m just being paranoid.

Really let me reword this and No i am not looking to hang a company for anything! I asked a question my dad was a hvac guy for 40 years and has since passed so sorry to ask such a Complicated question! Maybe i did word the questions wrong We have a Goodman 5 ton 16 Seer its about a year old the compressor was defective so they replaced the COMPRESSOR about 10 months ago--A few days ago the company came back and did a check up on the unit then said the compressor bolts needed to be loosened i was asking a question about that!

Older compressors that used Springs on there mounts needed to be loosened to allow the compressor to "Float" on the springs.

Todays units have the mounting springs inside. There are stops on the mounting studs.(at least there should be) the nuts tighten to these stops.

The bigger question is Why did the compressor fail?

Ok. That makes a lot more sense.
It’s one of those things where information can get jumbled. The more info we have the better we can help.

So, let’s talk about this replacement compressor ordeal.

I’ve never had a 1 year old compressor fail that wasn’t due to improper installation.

You have a 5 ton unit.
What’s your sqft and location?
That’s an awful big unit, and grossly oversized units lose compressors left and right.

As far as the mounting bolts, was that something completely unsolicited?
Did you mention noise or anything?

It’s just a weird thing for him to say. I don’t think they can really be too tight.

It could be possible it was transferring vibration, and he found the if he loosened it, the noise went away. If so, kudos to him. If not, it’s just weird.

Yes the compressor was a factory defect from day one it started making wild noises! We have just about 6000 SQ ft Home in AZ.... I did not say anything about noise or problems while the guy was here doing the check up he said everything looks good then he said he was going to loosen the compressor bolts some just to be safe--I said safe as in?? He said its good practice to do so-- All he did was back off the boths some i know the unit was sitting on the rubber bushings--Its all strange i guess i figuried one of the pros on Hvac here would know in a heartbeat.. I ve been a NYC Police Officer for 35 yeras and personally dont know much about bolt torque.. Have a good day!
