I have a super cheap Hisense (Chinese) 7 cu. ft. chest freezer that I got on sale at Costco for around $105. It ran fine for almost 2 years. Recently I had to briefly unplug it to move some stuff in the garage. When I plugged it back in and checked on it several hrs later, temp inside was rising. It has a rotary knob on the front to adjust temp, and a green power light. The power light was very dim and flickering. Circuit power was fine. I dialed the temp control knob to colder, thermostat clicked, compressor came on and it got down to -30F (too cold). I tried adjusting the control knob up and it turned off, but temp inside just kept rising. So now I am "feathering" the control knob, which either wants to be full blast cold or ambient temp, but will occasionally hold a reasonable freezer temp for a day or two before going off the rails again.
Having a pro out to service this would cost more than the thing cost. I can get a "universal" (hopefully compatible) temp control thermostat for similar-looking models for $-$ and would install that myself if it would buy me a couple more years of use. From my description, does that sound like the problem, or should I just scrap it? I hate pi$$ing good money after bad, but the compressor and mechanical components are obviously still good. I'd appreciate any advice.
