I was servicing a Rheem condensing unit Model 14AJM36A01 and found bad fan motor. Since this an old unit and customer doesnt want to replace with an expensive ECM motor is it wise to install an universal motor?

If it is a old unit and the owner does not wish the OEM replacement part and you feel comfortable about any wiring modifications or performance issues that could arise.. You certainly can replace it with a universal motor to get some more miles out of the unit.

I would however give a clear disclaimer that this is his choice and you don't professionally recommend it and cannot warranty it beyond the work done and the manufacturers warranty.

I agree with you HellGato. It is very important to Let the customer know the risks before any repair.

Im not sure whether this is a variable speed motor or a constant torque Ikapigian, but the information plate on the motor itself shows ECM 142R. Kind of expensive

When you say height Do you mean the distance from both ends? And the cfm I suppose you have to go to specs right?

So this rheem condensing unit uses a constant speed DC outdoor condenser fan motor? Interesting, good detective work Ammar, I bet this OP's problem
could be a bad inverter board and not a motor at all... just saying..

No it is a 1/5th HP single speed 230 Volt motor--there is no circuit board nor have I ever seen a 14 SEER unit with a VS outdoor fan

I don't mean to throw a wrench into this discussion, but part # 51-102870-03 was used before the 27 week of 2010. This was an ECM motor.

The install manual even shows the wiring diagram for both the PSC and ECM motors.

My mistake and apology to the OP- I looked it up on MYRHEEM and did not see an ECM-Thank You

I emailed you the install manual on this unit so you could see the wiring for both the PSC and ECM motors, if you want to convert it back to a PSC motor.

Hope this helps.
