Carrier Infinity outdoor air temperature negative 50 degrees

Our Carrier Infinity outdoor air temperature is sometimes reading -50 degrees. Sometimes the outside temperature reads normally. Other times (maybe 25% of the time?) it reads at -50 (or -49, -48 degrees). It’s important that the outdoor temp read correctly as it’s a dual fuel system, and we’d of course like the heat pump to run except when it’s actually very cold outside.

We had this entire system installed new in 2012. Compressor is product number 25HNB660A0031030 / model number 25HNB660A310. System included a first-generation Infinity thermostat which we have inside the house.

I’m assuming that if there were a problem between the compressor and the indoor Infinity thermostat, I would see all kinds of other communication problems or errors on the thermostat, but everything appears fine other than the outdoor temp reading being incorrect.

I pointed out the issue to our tech during a recent summer maintenance checkup, and they said that maybe I just needed to flip the breaker to reset the system. I tried that, but no improvement. Tech would not do any further troubleshooting as they said this is a "winter problem” and it’s not yet winter.

Is this a known issue (-50 readings, not tech who won’t diagnose)? I found some posts on here about bad outdoor temp readings, but not ones this wild. How can I avoid the runaround? This is supposedly a top company in my area, and the ones who originally installed the system. Called another company out and they tried to sell me an entire new system.

Many thanks in advance for any help!

Find a different tech.

It could be the sensor or in a wiring connection anywhere along the circuit.
To me that wasn’t a very smart tech. I would much rather diagnose a sensor problem when it is warm rather then when your fingers are freezing off.

I suggest calling the installing company and speaking to the hmfic. Go over the symptoms and pointing out that the temp sensor, the wiring or thermostat could be suspect. HTH
