They say "a little knowledge is very dangerous" and I am one of those people. Some years ago I had a Carrier Infinity A/C system installed with an Aprilaire 5000. I have a separate low voltage hot water baseboard heating system. I was suspect of the installer since he did not wire the heating system into the the Carrier Thermostat. He just suggested we use it separately. Now after all this time, I realize that the Aprilaire controller does not turn on a fan in the air handler, so if I set it to clean, let's say for 1/2 hour, it is only effective if the A/C system is on and running. It would seem to me that the original installer should have wired in a control or relay so that when I ask the Aprilaire controller to "clean" for 1/2 hour, the air handler will go on to circulate air through the Aprilaire deviice. It does not. The installer has recently been called and it was suggested to me that when I want the Aprilaiire to function I turn on the fan in the A/C unit. Essentially, that means that the Aprilaire controller and it's various functions do nothing since i have to run the fan myself. Shouldn't there have been a relay or some sort of connection that would allow the Aprilaire to toggle on the air handler while I call for the Aprilaire to clean? I am told that the Carrier Infinity thermostat may have a connection to the motherboard on the air handler which will allow this to occur. I can wire the heat thermostat to the Infinity controller but I have to wonder why the original tech did not.
I would be very interested in any observations relating to this from you guys with experience. I am reluctant to call the original installer back in since I think shortcuts were taken and in fact it has been a long time.
What are your thoughts?
