I had a Carrier ICS 58MVC 80,000 BTU gas furnace installed with an infinity control on 4/29/09. This was replacing a Whirlpool 70,000 BTU furnace that was 25 years old and I've lived in this house since Sept. '08. Effeciency rating was probably 70%, due to its age. I live in Central MN and we had a cold winter this year. So I thought with the age of the existing furnace and all the rebates and tax credits now is the best time to make the investment while everything is still working.
So here is my dilema:
I just received my first months gas bill post installation. The gas bill was for a period covering 4/27 - 5/27. I didn't run the new furnace that often during this period since it wasn't needed as it wasn't that cold (especially comparing it to Nov-Mar). I used 105 therms during this period. This is the second highest gas usage since Sept. '08. I'm concerned what my gas usage will be in the middle of next winter.
Here is my therm history:
Nov: 61; Dec: 175; Jan: 81; Feb: 96; Mar: 76; Apr: 51; May: 105.
The end of April I installed a brand new water heater as that was 25 years old as well. These are my only two gas users in the house. Everything else is electric.
Should I be concerned with the amount of gas usage post installation? My thought was that this new furnace would be cheaper to operate than a 25 year old furnace. It appears not. Is there anything my installer can check? Something just doesn't seem right as I replace all my gas consumers to higher effeciency models and my gas consumption and bills go way up. I wonder what my usage would be in Jan '10 with this new furnance.
It appears I bought an expensive gas hog. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.
