I have read lots of posts on R32 and R410A systems where people are saying do NOT use R32 in a R410A system.
But I have not seen or any one ask can you go backwards?
Can you use R410A in an R32 system.
R32 is a 50% + %05 mix of both R410a and R32, where as R32 is just 100% R32

I have read some that say yes but ya need to change all the pipes due to the pressure is 1.5 times due to its density
Yet there are systems available that are pre made for Both R32 and R410a for that exact reason due to R32 not been widely available in the USA

Here is my problem.
I have an R32 system, but I needed to add 15ft of pipe.
According to the man specs i need to ADD 1lb of R32 due to extending the pipes.
You can not buy 1Lb of R32 in the USA like R410A
You can get 20lb tanks at $ plus, and all my local AC guys say the same they are not going to buy something they have not yet been called to repair to have to buy some and sit on it.
So I was told i can use R410A
Any one have any thoughts
And Yes i have reached out to the manufacturers who are giving me the run around and not answering so I am getting to the point I may just send the whole system back
Sitting in 94 degree plus temps is starting to get to me al over a silly AC unit with the so called latest tech no one wants to repair!!

You cannot mix refrigerants in the field when charging equipment.
The rule is quite clear and simple.
If you need R-32, then use that.

So just curious when why do Manufacturer advertise this.
This is taken from ONE manufacture web site selling R32 units

Installation Package: Our ac mini split system comes with an indoor unit, outdoor unit, multifunctional remote control, and comprehensive installation kit; Pre-charged with environmentally friendly R32 refrigerant (replaceable with R410A refrigerant) while the air filter is washable and easy to clean; Professional installation is required for this system

You’re listed as a tech/installer.
Buy a bottle and use it for future customers.

I am a small one man outfit that keeps the most common on tap.
So i have R410A hence why all the questions that yet not one person has answered.
I have empty tanks to remove any of R32 in the system but from what I have seen it is empty as there is also a leak on the system and you can not full a vacuum
This has to be fixed first but like everyone else I am trying to find answers to give teh customer before proceeding
I like others do not have a spare few hundred bucks lying around to buy a 30lb tank for something i may not use for the next 3 years as most units are under warranty for the next 5 years
As said I only need One Lb not 30

Is this a minisplit?
What brand is it?

It does make sense they start making smaller bottles of uncommon but still necessary things though. Come to think of it, I still have a 70% full purple gas / CFC-502 sitting around. Getting rid of things like this will become a huge pain in the future.

I've seen camping propane sized obscure gases on eBay before, but looks like I don't see them anymore. Obscure gases like CFC-114, CFC-502 and such.

Are you in the US? R32 is cheaper than 410 and that's dirt cheap right now. If you aren't making enough to cover a bottle you are working for free. No manufacturer is going to tell you to replace with 410. If you simply look at the PT charts for each refrigerant you will find a simple answer

Yes I am in the USA.
I am trying to find a supplier of R32 in the 800 gram refill bottles that for some reason are only available outside the USA and you can only get only 20 or 30 lb cannisters.
As a single man operation I can not afford to pay out the money needed for one of these and then hope I may be able to use the remaining within its usability time frame
So i am trying to source per job.
But as I have R410A on hand, it was mentioned to me that R32 systems can use it which is what started this thread, as r32 is so new to the system

I picked up a bottle this morning for less than the cost of 410. We have been putting Daikin units in for months that are r32 and just finished off the initial bottle purchase. Reefer doesn't go bad. There should be enough profit to cover the cost or you aren't charging enough. 410 reefer is about 9x cost per pound so a little over 2 pounds sold covers the tank. Time is money don't waste it trying to source refills. Don't forget you need a left hand thread adapter....add that into the repair price

I agree with the others, you sound like a homeowner/DIY. Let me guess, you bought a mini-split online and are trying to install it?

R410A is a 50/50 blend of R32 and R125. It's not a "mixed gas" in the sense you implied - It's a blend made with precision by the manufacturer, not just two gasses dumped into a system in the field.

The only people who want to buy 1lb cans of refrigerant are DIY. Homeowners don't want to fork over the money for a whole jug because they'll never use the rest of it. Plus no one will sell you one if you aren't EPA certified anyway.

A pro would just buy the 20lb jug of R32 and keep the leftover for later. You're going to need more of it eventually if you really are doing service.

To answer your original question:
Would it work if you removed all the R32 and used R410A? Maybe. Should you do it? I wouldn't recommend it. Using R410A may void the manufacturer's warranty and could also void the UL listing.

It's your unit though, feel free to do whatever you want to it.

The Birt

Please understand that we're just trying to protect our trade, and also not encouraging homeowners to do illegal or dangerous stuff. We get a lot of homeowners who claim to be techs just so we'll tell them how to fix their units.

If you are a tech, please apply for Pro. We have a small team of trusted individuals who will verify your credentials, and then once you are given pro status, you can post in the private forums and the guys will bend over backwards to help you.

It's a mini split from overseas... Overseas manufacturers don't really care about what kind of refrigerant it is. They don't abide by US law.
