So I decided to add some Freon to my home HVAC. I have a auto a/c manifold gauge which I used to add r134a to my car, similar to this one, http://www.amazon.com/Refrigeration-Manifold-Gauge-R404A-R134A/dp/B00E8TAEZU.

Now, are the manifold gauge interchangeable between auto a/c and home HVAC? I believe both a/c use 1/4 valves for high and low pressure lines, although the refrigerant types are different (i.e., r234a vs. r22).

Stop, and call a professional now before you harm the unit.
No they are not interchangeable.
Are you even licensed by the EPA to handle refrigerant?
Why have you decided your unit needs to be charged?

No, they are not interchangable. The gauges are marked with specific temperatures and pressures that correspond to the refrigerant you're using. You can't check the charge on a home unit with an auto gauge set, and vice versa.

Why do you think it needs recharged? Where would you even get the refrigerant? I know the auto stores sell 1# cans of R22 but this is not a good idea. You could do a lot of damage to your system by just blindly adding refrigerant to it.

Please call someone to look at it for you.

R134 automotive gauges are 1/2" quick connect... Home a/c systems use 1/4" flare fittings... Not compatible with the automotive gauges...

tell us more about why you think you need Refrigerant added... ordinarily, home HVAC systems never need refrigerant for the life of the system... and if some is needed, repairs are needed to go along with the refrigerant.
