3,000 sq ft, single level, new home construction in Seattle - open floor plan (Entry, Great Room, Dining, Kitchen open area), 10' and 12' ceilings throughout house.
I'd like to locate all the supply registers and return vents on the ceilings. Each bedroom will have its own return vent, and a large return vent in a hall ceiling for the open Great Room/Kitchen/Dining/Entry area.
I want a Carrier modulating furnace and the HVAC contractor is concerned that air flow rates with that furnace are often too low for good air mixing (comfort issue) with both supplies and returns in the ceiling. He wants to put the supply registers in ceilings with low wall return vents, or supply registers in the floor with ceiling return vents.
I'm looking for 2nd opinions because Manual D says "Since the return inlet location (high or low) has a negligible effect on the air motion within the room (refer to ACCA Manual T, Section 7), return openings may be placed at positions that are compatible with the location of the equipment and the duct runs." But that doesn't explicitly say supply and returns can BOTH be high (or both low), so I'd like to hear more about this. Thanks.
