Need some advice, I live in North Eastern Mass, and have a 28 year old 2300 sq ft Colonial, well built for its time, with new windows. The Boiler is probably original and a 83k btu Weil Mclain Gas Boiler. I just had the water heater replaced with a Superstor Ultra 45, original had a 40 gallon gas water heater. Now when I had it cleaned for the winter the man said that since the boiler is so old and small, it will not be able to both heat my house, and the water heater. He showed me that the water demands a 141k btu boiler (in the manual). We are new owners, but when I had called the gas company before buying they said the house had used $1500 in total gas for the entire last year.

So my question is, is my boiler grossly undersized and will it fail? Advice or further questions appreciated.

Thanks

If it does it's not because of the water heater, it was because it's time had come.

OK, I would be talking to the guys that installed the 45 ultra, ask them why they put in a 45? Should have been a 30. It will heat the water just fine, but the recovery time will be long. So on a very cold day you had better not take long showers, lol. I would look at adding a booster of some kind. Or you could start looking at new boilers.
