Bad capacitors

What do you do with the bad capacitors that you we replace?
And what are we supposed to do with the capacitors that are no good?

I thought you were suppose to abandon them in place??? Everyone is doing it that way around here.

Let 'em roll around in the back of the truck till they're neutralized. Then toss 'em in my trash when I think of it and have the energy or a decent beer buzz.

I do not think recycled but think there might be a proper way to dispose of them? There are signs at the scrap metal yard that says we do not take capacitors. I have placed them in the small recycle container that we put paper and plastic in the guys take them out and put them on the ground they will not take them either. When we get the large recycle container they will not be able to see them. The fluorescent light bulbs and ballast the commercial companies have to pay to get rid of them.

Yeah, I have 3 large caps that were made in the 50's, they are marked as containing 1.4 gallons of oil each.
I have been trying to get rid of them for 15 years with no luck!

Caps used to use PCB as a dielectric but stopped some years ago. Probably if it's an old cap maybe better to leave it where i failed.
I took a whole bunch of cell batteries to a battery dealer and was told that weren't recycling that kind and just toss them in the garbage.

I just check to see what MFD it is putting out, put several together to reach what is needed then install it. That way all of the old ones are recycled!
You should have seen the 65MFD I needed once. it took 75 of those little things. I had to put inside the condenser section, weighed almost 15 lbs :grin2:

I measure all the caps I take off & keep a lot of them , parallel or series (series cuts the volts in half, that the cap sees) connections to get that temporary cap. Edit, also, measure every cap I condemn.
You need no calculations either, just measure the beast you created. Parallel volts is the lowest one. Series is more complicated, there is a formula, but the volts the cap sees get very low with each added cap.
But how to mount it & make it safe...
Many new units & compr get replaced from just bad caps.
