A few years ago my daughter found some baby squares that were blown
out of their nest.
They were so tiny and their eyes were not yet open
and they were covered in fire ants, being eaten alive.
She brought them home and we put them in a box
she would get up every hour to feed them with an eye dropper.
When they got older I put them in a cage
with a wooden cottage birdhouse I bought.
As they got even older,
we would start to acclimate them to outdoors
by leaving them out during the day
then gradually increase the time until they could stay out all night.
When it came time to release them
I would climb a tree and duct strap the cottage to the tree.
They would eventually leave the cottage and I would
take it down and sanitize it.
Word of this got around and now whenever anyone finds
baby squares, they take them to the feed store
and the feed store calls my daughter to come pick them up.
Since baby square time is getting close
I thought I would post some pictures of last years
batch.
And yes,
My property is covered in squares
they are everywhere but I have lots and lots of oak trees
plus since I buy my peanuts in bulk because I like to make my own boiled peanuts
for friends and family
we always have plenty to feed the squares.
