We have a customer with a Florida Heat Pump 2 ton geothermal unit in their attic. The internal water coil leaked last year, filled the compressor with water, and we installed a new unit - just about a year ago now.

About a month ago, while they were away, one of the plastic water lines split, water ran back past the secondary drain pan, and flooded the house.

I hate to toss the new FHP unit. I want to pipe it to an air cooled unit outdoors. Seems straight-forward. Of course I would have to size the 13 SEER condensing unit to make sure it has a two ton compressor in it - so maybe 2.5 or 3 ton rated.

Any other problems that you all can foresee?

No - but that's a fine idea! Thanks.

They just want me to guarantee that they will not have to rebuild their house again from water damage. The only way I am willing to do even hope for that is to get all the water out of the attic.

The first floor unit lost a heat reclaim coil a few years ago but only flooded the crawl space. This unit leaked internally once and then this time cracked a plastic crimped fitting. It was BAD - hardwood all warped, carpet and padding junk, flake board floors into mush, sheetrock falling, the whole house had been painted top to toe two months prior.

I'll call FHP and ask them. How does this thing work? I'll have to pipe the discharge and liquid lines down to the crawl space?
