Well, each of us reaches that point of changing phones... :)

I have been using a trusty iphone 3G (not a 3GS) for 2.5 years now... it has worked without a flaw... other than being dreadfully S L O W (and it needs to be re-booted about once a week... the software seems to get scrambled easily now-a-days).

I have been looking at either the new Samsung Note (AT&T), or waiting for a while longer for the newest iphone (the current 4S screen is just too small).

One of the major features I want is:
Each evening plug the phone into a cable to my desktop, and sync:
Contacts,
Calendar,
Notes,
Pictures (to a cell phone picture file)
(and maybe other things in the future)
With automatically update and phone charging; I would prefer this happen without the phone shutting off... as I like the phone to stay on 24/7 to receive messages.

So far, I have not found the way to accomplish this sync protocal with an Android phone... my iphone used to do this through i-tunes... but seems to not want to anymore.

Can anyone shed light on how I can do these tasks?

Note: I would prefer to NOT use the cloud for this... rather do it ALL by hardwire between my phone and desktop.

THX in advance for any help folks would like to post.

I have had an HTC Incredible for a little over a year now. No problems whatever.

It can sync by plugging it into the computer, you have to download and install HTC Sync software (free) onto your PC. I never do though. I use Gmail and it is always syncing with my phone. I can change or add contacts, notes, calendar etc. on my phone or PC and minutes later it shows up on the other.

I'm sure every manufacturer will have software you can install on your PC to sync everything. There have to be numerous sync apps in the Android market as well, I have never looked for them since I use gmail for email, contacts, calendar etc.

I thought I had the Google sync thing down, but turns out it may NOT be as complete as one may be told/think.

I had a reset done on my 1 week old smart(?)phone and lost EVERY contact and all my downloads. This was done by the service provider, with the only concern of loosing any text messages.

To this day I am unsure if the daily sync is actually doing me any good. I do not trust the store sales people anymore and the on call tech support is spotty.

Just be cautious.

When you put contacts in your phone it gives you a choice to save to phone our google....you have to save to google then it automatically goes into a new phone or a phone that has been wiped

Yes, make sure you save all contacts as Google contacts! If you just save them as phone contacts, you will need a backup program.

Also, utilize the "Import/Export" feature, send them to the SD card regularly, or before considering going to the store for problems, as most times if you have an issue, it could be a piss-poor program bleeding memory and battery life, and they will recommend you do a wipe to get rid of it.

I had this problem where I could make it to about 6pm and then have to throw it on the charger to get out of the red before bed. However, I wiped this weekend and after restoring it, I now get from the time I pull of the charger in the morning, and here it is 10pm, and I still have half of my battery life.

Also, an app I CANNOT RECOMMEND ENOUGH: App Backup & Restore. It apparently works by backing up the installed programs and their APK's to the SD card. When you go to restore, it basically works like you just downloaded the app again and you clicked on the link to installl it. It's really impressive, I spent about 90 minutes loading all of my apps while doing dishes, and since then, it's been a charm!

I'm LOVING my HTC Merge. I HATE HTC Sense however, it's the worst loading program for the desktop EVER

As far as cell phones go I used to be on the low tech side of life, Last summer my wife talked me into getting a smart phone and now I love it.

It's an older...slightly slower phone than the new ones, but I have the Casio Commando android.

This thing is built like a rock and I highly recommend it to anyone that works a dirty, hard, labor intensive job. My phone has been ran over, dropped, kicked, dropped in water, left in a hot car all day, you name it. It is proven to be effective in colder and warmer temperatures than any other phone on the market as well as water proof...it has gaskets that keep the internals of the phone safe.

The Commando does everything on your wish list and more...when syncing an android you have to change the plug-in type settings in the phone. It will ask you when you plug into a computer if you want mass storage, sync, or charge only mode.

Both this phone and my wife's phone were free when purchased with a two year verizon contract through walmart online, through verizon the phone costs over 600 dollars even with buying a 2 year plan.

I don't like the material of which Samsung phones are generally made of. They may be powerful and so on, but still they usually look like cheap old cells. That's why I prefer using any other smartphones than Samsung.

They are JUNK...NEVER buy a Samsung. Cases are thin, cheap and easily broken. Not to mention they seem to find every bit of water they can come into contact with, even just being a humid day.

My advice to the OP is to stick with Iphone (and I am a huge advocate of Android). Buy a used 4 or 4s to avoid contract renewal. If you need more screen space, get a used Ipad 2.

Now this is a thought. I know where I could get a used '4'. This way the phone would be small enough to carry socially.

The ipad would be the big screen for internet research of old and obsolete furnaces and AC units folks will not replace.

Craigslist, Ebay, Iphone forums. Might want to keep an eye on Slickdeals for discounted Ipad 2's. I only suggest used again so you can keep your upgrade for when the Iphone 5 is released, hopefully with a larger screen. With that said, I really don't mind using my wifes Iphone 4s. Beautiful screen, although a little small, makes it easier to read and view web pages since it has such high resolution.

I have the iPhone 4S, and love it. It's superfast, faster than my work desktop that supposedly is fibre optic to the LAN closet and CAT 5 to the computer. The camera is super sharp, and I've had it stop motion on one of the P66 driven motors, so it is faster than my old iPhone. Front and rear camera so I can video talk to someone. They made a big improvement in the battery life. The iPhone can do somethings that i find incredible with high accuratcy. It can pick-up my heart rate via tha camera, graph it, display the number, and save it till later. I have a pediometer app that is very accrurate. It can scan my engine codes and tell me what's wriong with my truck. I have a new Siesmetic app I'm playing with. If I have a piece of equipment that has a slight vibration the iPhone will pick that up, graph it and I can load it to the computer. Come back a week or two later, take another reading to see if it's worse. If you get something other than an Apple are you going to have to re-buy the apps? BTW I still Sync my iPhone via cable, so they did give you that choice. Also I kept my old iPhone turned it inti an iPod and I sync it with my iPhone so I do have a mobile copy of it. My old iPhone is also hidden in my truck, if someone steals the truck it can be located.

Or how many crashes a day one would have to deal with... :grin2:

The idea of a smart phone AND tablet is intriguing... I am kinda thinking this through now. The advantage of only a smart phone (no laptop also), is only one 'data' feed. If I could get a smart phone on a provider that would let me tether the tablet... well that would be the best of both worlds.

AND:

The current iphone is a little smaller than most smart phones... and would be fine for non-work needs.

Android all the way. Preferably a high end HTC device. Save all your contacts as Google contacts. If not, from within the phone dialer app, hit menu and choose export contacts to sd card. That will save them to your sd card. Then at a later time, you can choose import contracts from sd card to get them all back. Google will sync everything though. Have never had a problem with my Evo or Evo 3D. My smart is more of a tool than a phone to me. I have an unbelievable amount of HVAC related pdf documents (mostly thanks to rundawg) and other HVAC related apps. Never be without a manual again!

Get an Android, root it (means to unlock it) and tether for free. That's how I do it.
