I go on a call for no heat. It's a Goodman Furnace, 90%.
Dependable 92 GMNT120-5. I cycle it quick, ignitor's on, board clicks, no power to gas valve. Having years of experience on these, I immediately start checking for a popped rollout switch...
Found it! Holy crap, the wires on both sides of the top rollout are crisp. Rollout is busted, won't reset. Top plate is all scortched. Hmmm, why would that be? Then I gaze up at this...
That's a U42 3.5 ton NARROW A-coil on this 5 TON DRIVE FURNACE! They used a blankoff plate to shrink down the supply opening, then off the coil they transition up to the original opening. WHY? Customer says... "It doesn't cool for sh*t in the summer either". I WONDER WHY!
Here's the blankoff, which they made out of a piece of metal they cut off the furnace when they opened the return. I guess they wanted the color to match.
Customer is renting this place, doesn't want to put money in it and her lease says she has to pay. She wanted us to just "get it running" for her since she's moving out later this year. After a quick check of the return (which is cut into the rear of the furnace, of course), I decide that I want no part of this mess unless she's (a) replacing the furnace with a properly installed new one, or (b) paying to have this one repaired and then reinstalled properly.
Want to know the best part? The CITY APPROVED THIS INSTALLATION! They showed me the permit and the approval sticker. Some inspector must've got a cash bonus!
