Good evening,
I am in the process of getting a repair or replacement of my AC unit. I can either add return air, replace coil and hope it works or replace entire AC system.
With that said, I recently got a quote on a Amana system (dual zone) with totally new duct work. I currently have metal ducts but they want to use R-8Flex, everything I have read in this forum says keep the metal. My current system is a Trane XL 12 Seer (5 ton) and the furnace was replaced with the outside unit. The coil is a Payne (4 ton) and does not appear to have been replaced with the other equipment. House was built in 84.
Looking for advice on the following:
1. For half the cost i can do the duct work and coil. Currently compressor and furnace are approx 9 years old, coil - who knows (they didn't, no tags or id). FYI... the Trane compressor was replaced last year under warranty.
It seems to me that replacing the entire system would make since but just looking for some confirmation.
2. They are pushing Amana but also carry Lennox (among others). Amana has a lifetime warranty for the compressor and furnace, Lennox does not. Should that sway my choice?
3. House is approx 2500 sq feet, they are pushing a 16 seer saying the 18 will provide no additional value. Really? Are there technical reasons why I should wait until early next year before replacing existing system etc?
4. Replace existing metal duct work with R-8 flex and seal with mastik or fix and seal with mastik the existing metal duct work. Should the cost be about the same for both?
As always, thanks in advance for anything this community can share.
