Right now I do apartment maintenance. I am sick of how hackish this place is and the people who inhabit the complex. Built from the ground up without a plan.

I picked up an application at the pipefitters union on monday. I would really rather go to hobarts for welding but I am already in too deep with devry (Yes I learned something but the ratio of smarts to cost is absurd) I would like to do the apprentice pipefitter and since they pay you while you learn it seems like a good deal.

I can tell if I stay at my current job, I might see a fifty cent raise over the next 4 years. I would take a dollar an hour hit for the first year in the union.

I make 15.50 an hour now, on call one week on two weeks off. The learning seems to make it worth it. I just don't want to be 45 and still stuck doing this for sub $20 which is exactly what will happen if I stay.

I have no problems working long hours but I hate going home, showering or sleeping and have some lady call me with an attitude to fix something she broke or flushed.

If they will accept you, DO IT.

There is nothing to think about.
If you want to earn top dollar and have the best training that is available then it should be very simple for you to answer.

I know guys making over scale at $46.00 an hour +.

Training
Local Pension
National pension
Benefits
Normal Work week
Overtime

Its a very simple answer for a simple question.

Fellow UA member here. If you get past the first tests and get an interview DO NOT mention anything about wage. Instant deny. We don't want guys in it for the money, we want the guys who want to do the best job possible.

Taking a dollar hit? That's NOTHING !!

I got into the trade at around 25. It was the single best decision I have probably ever made.

anything to better yourself is worth it. It sounds like you already made up your mind. good for you on having the initiative on getting the app. The first step is the hardest and I also the fear of the unknown stops a lot people. one of my old bosses and now friends always told me "no balls no babies" good luck to you

Hello DeltaShmelta,
At our apprentice graduation, on the 6th of June, the apprentice that graduated number one was 48 years old.

Like Timebuilder and Redman 1126 said, if you can get in do it.
You will not regret it.

Wow I'm inspired ....my bro in law is Plumber been with union for 15 years he's making around 41/hour. Around the same time I was a Marine and have worked as Paramedic for over 12 years and 4 as EMT for private companies not FD. I'm making 15 an hour here in SoCal last Ambulance company I Interviewed with offered me 13 dollars hour regardless of experience no medical dental let alone 401k or any retirement.
I went to inquire about union and drop an app they said first year apprentice is around 19/hour ....I was blown away

Guy I was working with Friday is in his last year of the apprenticeship and he's turning 37 before it's done, he's happy that he did it because he makes a better living than he would have other wise.

I know of some guys in their late 30's with 1 or 2 years of apprenticeship left. One of them started as a 3rd year apprentice in '09. Still has 2 years of classes to do.

Screwed up local. They're happy though.
