Hey all,
I'm new to the whole HVAC arena and want to make sure I'm not being taken for a ride.

I'm looking at a new Rheem system and have been quoted $ for a SEER 16 two step compressor with matching air handler. Also included is the full installation, replacement of the supply plenum, UV light and dynamic filter air cleaner.

They definitely seemed knowledgeable and answered whatever question I had. I just wanted to see if the price seemed good?

Does $ seem right?

I saw where talking about quotes wasn't allowed in the residential HVAC forum, so I hope its ok here. I apologize if this isn't allowed, but didnt see anything saying that I could ask.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry. pricing questions are not allowed here either.

Only contractors in your area that see your job, can give a price.

if you have questions about the quote price. get other estimates, and compare them. And ask each contractor why their price is higher or lower then the other guy/guys.

Please read the residential forum. And read the threads by people that went price shopping. And used a lower priced contractor. And are now asking what can be done to fix this or that problem. now that the contractor won't take their calls anymore.

After you get more quotes. Come back and you can ask about any of the benefits that you may not have gotten a good answer from them for.

We just can't talk about prices. They vary to much just 100 miles from one area to the next, let alone across the country and world.

And don't always go for the lowest price. If one of your estimates is a lot lower than the others for the same thing, it may mean they are cutting corners somewhere which may haunt you down the road. Not always, but it can be a red flag.

O they could be completely legit with less overhead due to they don't have to charge so much cause they dont have 3 secretaries and 5 managers to pay

A big problem down here in Florida and I'm sure in most other areas is sometimes you pick the lowest number from a less reputable Boynton Beach AC contractor and they hit you later on with the dredded 'change order'. Which they claim is an unforeseen cost, but in reality should have been factored in the original price. Really educate yourself on the requirements of the job and go with a good referral.

So, I checked with the BBB and Angie's List for the contractor and decided to go with a Carrier Infinity Performance SEER 16 Heat Pump instead. From what I've read here in the forums, it's one of the better products out there. The contractor got an A from both. It was a few hundred more, but I'm thinking it's worth it.

The lowest bid may not have as much overhead. Beware, low overhead could mean operating "out of a garage". May not have enough resources to take care of you three years later (even if the warranty says 5 years).
