another simple check I like to do to test if a liquid line solenoid valve holds is while the solenoid is de-energized...watch your TEV. It will be expected that the outlet will remain cold while liquid refrigerant is boiling off during initial pump down. But if the TEV continues to feed throughout the defrost cycle the outlet will remain cold.

Often times this method is more obvious than checking temperature drop across the solenoid itself.
 
Sooner or later you are going to close the king valve on liquid line and find your answer as to what the comprssor will or will not do and all will become evident.
