I have a friend who needs a new system. She fills it up every year and it freezes every year. The lack of refrigerant isn’t the only issue tho. The condenser is 3 tons, with a 5 ton evap coil. And also no airflow. I did not do a static I just stopped by after work to take a look. The filter was difficult to say the least to get out.

The problem is, very small work area. With the layout of the room the system is in and the way the ductwork is laid out. The only way I can get a furnace and evap coil in there that is short enough to feed the main supply run without cutting into the coil box, is an Aspen coil. I’ve heard multiple people tell me to avoid them at all costs, even the guy at the local supply house I won’t name any businesses here tho. But have also heard a few say, ehh they’re all the same man.

I guess the question is. Should I put the Aspen in and add a danfoss TXV instead of the piston. Or put in a normal Goodman or Bryant system and cut into the coil box.

BTW I’ve been in the files for 4 years now. 1 as an installer, all Lennox, 3 as a residential service tech, same company but not all Lennox. So I have some experience but not a seasoned vet yet.

Thank you

This thread should be moved to the tech to tech area.

That said I would go with the Aspen coil if it fits. I believe Aspen now has an aluminum option which is what I'd go with. I would definitely go for the TXV.

I can't say I've had so many issues with Aspen coils that I'd never use them. Look at it this way the system now doesn't work properly at all and an Aspen coil will fit perfectly for what you want to do.

Sometimes you don't have a choice - space limitation forces you to use a third party coil like an Aspen, ADP, or Allstyle.

As for the TXV, Aspen offers "bolt on" TXV kits for their coils. You remove the piston and the TXV screws on to the piston body, no brazing required.

I just put a 5 ton Aspen in a few days ago with similar situations. Haven't used one in many years but it wasn't bad. All aluminum the quality was similar to all the rest and it had a txv. This was for a older Rheem setup that lost the charge to a leak. Couldn't fit any cased coil other than the Aspen at 27" high it worked out well. I had to swap a danfoss r22 txv in and it was simple. System ran great on NU22

We've been using Aspen in many cases since ADP became murder to get. Our A-S supplier is selling them as an alternative to A-S coils. A-S/Trane is coming out with an uncased coil. And guess what, Aspen is making it. Our supplier said they'd stay with Aspen, less money!

All refrigerants are heavier than air ,naturally settle down. Refrigerants Vapors are heavier than air and can displace oxygen causing difficulty breathing or suffocation. May cause cardiac arrhythmia.
