A very close buddy renovated a new to him house. W/ a little bit of encouragement and instruction (phone) he installed on his own two 2T AC split systems, from soup to nuts, 10 years ago. My worker and I went to his house today and we did a normal intense routine. A part of what we did was to replace the LLFD and added a SGMI. Upon start up both SG's showed lots of activity and we showed Scottie the bubbling in the glasses. Upon cross examination of his work it was discovered that freon was not added to the 30' linesets. So we topped off the juice charges and he smiled and said,"What do you expect from me, I'm just a HO".LOL

Sounds like he did fairly decent for just a HO. Imagine what a little training and pro knowledge could do for him. Maybe a born natural talent👍

Wow talk about a intense maintenance.
Van, sorry to disappoint your way of thinking, but this is a NORMAL routine for us. We also replaced the compressor contactors ,simply because there was no way to check the condition of the contactor contacts and I am not willing to take a "chance" that the contacts are not pitted/burnt/worn after 10 years. We DO NOT wait until they break and receive "an EMERGENCY,HELP" phone call. I insist!!! The contactor that we installed has a screwed on ''arc shield" cover that can be removed and the contacts inspected once a year. Those are MY rules, not the customers. We also flushed the condensate "P" trap w/ 1 gallon of water.

I mean, I'm really impressed about this person. No formal training and experience, yet such a good job! Doesn't he want to get in this job after getting a little more prepared? He could do really well :grin2:

I am also impressed. I met this guy at his Deli and we connected as friends. He also came to work w/ me once a week for 6-8 weeks "just to see" what I do for a living. I talked him into going to Adult HVACR BOCES at night and we discussed "EVERYTHING" that he was taught in BOCES. But he loved zabitzig w/ his Deli customers more than anything.

Wow, this HO had a vacuum pump, gauge manifold, micrometer, torch kit, and nitrogen...and after 10 years being low on freon, it never iced up? You need to hire this man! :D

No he does not have/own those tools. He borrowed them from another friend who does HVAC and he works for a major large oil Co.
