So I have decided to go Rheem as they can deliver price, quality, product and service.
Great choice! of course I'm a bit bias, I'm a Ruud dealer. :grin2:

I should ask does anyone think
I need a separate air return for my 1400 sq. feet downstairs?

I might add I only have one heater vent downstairs also.
I was thinking that if he was going to add a return,
he could run another duct in my bar area.

In the winter when it gets into the 20's and below
It is Too Cold to use the room and be comfortable.

In the winter the room stays about 60 degrees.
A little chilly

My return upstairs takes a 20x20 filter and can be modified to a 24 or 25 x 20
the Condo is 3300 sq ft on 2 floors....the equipment room is downstairs.

++++++++++

Also they told me the system has plenty of "branches" ducting
so I do have the capacity air flow.
It is quite PAINFUL to read through this thread.

The warnings going unheeded here
are leading to A DOOMED Replacement.

Warnings: Posts # ..., 7, 8, 14, 15, 16, 18, 20, ...

How does one conclude that there are PLENTY OF BRANCHES
WHEN the 1,400 Sq Feet downstairs has
ONLY ONE Diffuser
( Supply Air Heater Vent) .?..??...???

Undersized filter: 20" x 20" = 400 sq inch
_______ can handle ABOUT HALF the necessary air flow rate.

A DOOMED Replacement will be Very PainFilled for the owners for >> ~ 2 decades.

Figure 3 has several steps that provide the overall process
to achieve a well performing system WITH PROPER AIR DISTRIBUTION.

I choose this HVAC Rheem dealer because he was the most competent as the rest were not worth the bids given to me
The rest were disasters waiting to happen and frankly some were crooks
Thank you

Can the Ducts handle the capacity?

Can the Ducts handle the capacity?
Installation of a Ruud 100k BTU 80% efficient two
stage with ECM blower motor furnace
(U802VA100521MXA) and 4 ton 17 SEER two stage
AC system (UA1748AJ2CB)( RCF6021MEAMCA). Price includes all
equipment, labor and material necessary for
complete installation. System comes with a 10 year
parts and 2 year labor warranty.
Job will require replacing the lineset from the
condenser on roof to the furnace in the crawlspace.
This will require cutting sheet rock to get the lineset
replaced.
***Sheet rock repair is to be done by a sheet rock
contractor provided by the home owner***
There will also be ductwork modification done to
force air to the downstairs room as best as possible
and potentially add some ducting if accessible. The
duct addition would be billed as a time and material
job and usually does not exceed $750. If we can do
basic modifications once the existing furnace is out
to help the airflow, that is included with the
installation.

My install will be done on May 20 and I finally will have heat and cooling in my downstairs daylight basement. Just a note I also have a wine cellar off the basement and I opened a 2002 Charmes Chambertin Roty Saturday. The wine has been cellered since 2006....so 16 years. The wine was deep red with no browning on the edge. Could have gone at least another 5 years. In the winter the cellar will be about 58 degrees and in the hot summer July August about 72 which is the same as my 1500 sqft basement.
The contractor will add/change the ducting so I will see what happens. There is a flexible liquid line with a stop. I talked to the tech that installed a system in the sister unit next store and said no cutting of sheetrock to remove the line.

Let me just add....I had five bids all did their calcs
3 Bid 100k btu furnaces some single stage and some 2 stage variable and non. 1 bid a 80 BTU 2 stage variable and the last bid a 120K BTU 2stage V
The AC units ranged from 3.5 to 5 ton
I choose the contractor who gave the best detailed bid and reflected what I wanted to achieve with this new system. Also all funds delivered on my approval when the job is done.

Others didn't even come close.
Sometimes you make what you feel is your best choice of product and most important the confidence in the installer....and limit your risk as best as you think. If something goes wrong you work it out.

Shows they are bidding a AHRI matched system. Should be good for any rebates your state or local electric utility may offer.

Shows AHRI #205236119 17.5 SEER and 13 EER on paper, not real world if homework was done correctly, need that number for possible rebates. Did they mention money in your pocket rebates to you? You can check yourself at your local electric utility company.

Have them do a accurate detailed startup/commissioning report on your system such as this guidelines

Make sure to register each piece as manufacturers warranty decreases if never registered. Besides the 10 year parts the HX shows a limited lifetime to original registered owner in a residential home.

“Others didn't even come close.”

Many things affect the price, overhead, quality of install and setup, brand and tier line, profit margin, cutting corners, what’s included with the bid, some bid may have sales tax included while others may be + sales tax , length of labor warranties, etc etc.

Thanks for all the info.

All the bids were different a few included part#'s and a separated price for each unit labor included. Also with the cost of a small crane to get the the AC units off and on the roof and the permit. A general mention of completion. No specifics of what I had specified as to the downstairs or added labor and ductwork.
Two just shot me one price and anything else needed was on a time and materials with no amount or rate specified
One gave my a very detailed quote but couldn't install till the middle of July. Disappointing

That only shows that don’t know what they’re doing, they’re guessing, or they never did them.

We will see....they don't see my check book till I'm satisfied. I don't expect any surprises, but it wouldn't be the first time I've kicked someone off a job. The contractor I chose...it would surprise the heck out of me if the job didn't work out.

IMO,…A good indication on how well your system was installed, set up, sized, performing/running ( after the Contractor collects their check once they are finished ) is by the amount of times you have to call them back under the labor warranty period to tweak, change the original setup, repairs, modifications, etc. another indication of how well the Tech. they send out is experienced/trained/knows your system is if they can fix any issues the 1st time….

If your proactive about your system, may want to ask them the sequence of operation on things like when does it kick into 2nd stage, how does that work, what happens to the blower speed, what happens when the A/C is close to the thermostat set point, what happens when the A/C is further from the set point to get a general idea how your system suppose to operate. Same applies for the furnace.

The system is installed and I am extremely happy. I am running the A/C and it really cools my place down. These are my initial observations and I will add some more later. I apologize for not answering every post, but I want to thank everyone here for taking a interest and all the excellent information. Roger
