Isn't the boiler cheaper operating cost ?
probably? I'm told gas is cheaper than electricity. The issue with the boiler is that its slow to warm the house and hard to control the temp, so we wanted to be able to balance things out between the heat pump and the boiler.

Do you know if its possible to add electric heat strips to the HVAC after its been installed?

Are you new to the home?
If so, have you had a boiler, hot water heat, before?
If not new to the home, how did you use the boiler before? By that I mean do you just set it at one temperature and leave it alone or did you use a program that turns it up and down?

If that heat pump is going into defrost, then it is air conditioning and blowing 40°ish air into the home with NO tempering by heat strips.

Can heat strips be installed now? Yes, if there is room in the electrical panel(load and breaker space) and you have or can run wire to power them from the panel to the air handler.

That UI(thermostat) should be able to tell you what is happening whenever you want to check it.
It will also store errors and will, if needed, throw an alert on the display when something is wrong.

When heating, there should be red letters showing "HEAT PUMP HEATING" in the lower right corner. If, when there is cold air blowing and that is not showing, something else is going on, maybe just the fan is running(do you have that running all the time? It is a good thing to do).
Maybe it is in defrost(that does not get displayed).
If heating is displayed, then check if the outdoor unit is running. If the unit is running and the fan is not going it is probably in defrost(unless there is an issue) and if the fan is running then you should be getting heated air(if not, you have a problem).

We are new to the house. Previous owners only had the boiler and window units for cooling. House was built in 1922 so getting a ducted HVAC system was a big job as there was no existing duct work.

When the heat is running i do see the "heat pump heating" on the thermostat. That is always there even when cool air is coming from the vents.
We do not have the fan running all the time, the system is set to "auto" so the fan does whatever it wants.

I've checked the outdoor unit when it is both blowing cold and hot air and the fan is running both times. I've also seen it in defrost mode and the fan was not running at that point.

Do you have any pointers on settings i could check on the thermostat? I know how to get into the "hidden" settings section but haven't changed anything there. The installers also didn't change anything in their, they just left everything as default or on auto.

So I took some photos of the HP status screen while the heat pump was running and cool air was coming from the vents. Appreciate if someone could take a look and see if anything stands out.

The one thing I noticed is the “heat pump heating” value at 24%
When there was warm/hot air coming from the vents that value was 100%
Also “discharge temp” was over 100F when it’s working well

1.0" static pressure is an issue!!!!

Have the contractor get it to .5 like it says in the manual.

The static needs to be checked with the proper tools, that t-stat is estimating.
I called them and gave them the numbers, also noticed there is a warning on the thermostat saying “excessive static pressure encountered”. He basically told me it’s fine as long as it’s not saying low static pressure.

Is it time to find a new hvac company?

:gah: Yes, sounds like it!

I wonder if it's reducing its capacity because it knows it can't move enough air.

To clarify, is the temperature in the house actually decreasing when its running in this mode? Or the discharge air just feels cool?

Yeah, the temperature of the house decreases, only by 1 or 2 degrees but it certainly is not going to heat the house.

Either he doesn't understand the message or he is full of sh!t.

in very few circumstances does "excessive" mean a good thing!!!!
