Hello!

We have Bryant evolution 5 ton 24 sear heat pump (model 284ANV060) that is less than a year old. I live in New York and when the outside temperature is very cold (say around 20-40F) the heat pump is totally useless. The air that comes from the vents is cold and basically cools down the house when we’re trying to warm it up.

The strange thing is that on a few occasions when it was really cold (20F) it worked really well and hot air was coming from the vents and it was great! This has only happened a few times but seems very weird. There is no auxiliary heat in this system at all so I’m not sure why it worked so well on those extremely cold days.

Now, we do have a completely separate boiler which works fine so it’s not like we’re without heat. But the company that installed the system told us the heat pump is “supplemental” heat only. But from what we’ve seen it’s basically useless as we can only really use it for heating when it’s really not that cold.

So basically just wanted to get some thoughts from some pros around if this system should actually provide some heat when it’s around freezing temp outside or should we just not bother with trying to use it for heat at all.

A 24 SEER heat pump should be able to heat even below 20°.

How long does the cold air cycle last? Unless the unit is in defrost (maximum of 10 minutes) during which the heat pump is removing heat from the air, there's something wrong.
Another possibility is that a thermostat setting is locking out the heat pump below a certain temperature, but does not seem likely since you state it heated before now.

I usually give it at least 20-30 minutes before just turning it off. A few times i've given it hours to try and it doesn't improve at all.
Its set to use the auto-defrost setting and looking at the condenser outside there isn't any frost on it at all (not sure if this is a good enough test)

I've tried to look at the thermostat for any setting along those lines and can't seem to find much.

We've tried to do this with the ppl who installed it and they keep telling me its "working as expected." They're pissing me off hah.
 
I agree, sounds like something wrong with your system. That heat pump is pretty powerful and should be putting out a decent amount of heat even at 20 degrees. The fact that it seemed to work before appears to confirm that.

thanks for the input... running it today when its 47F out and its working like a champ.
Last night when it was slightly colder around 40F and it wasn't working at all.

Look at the performance chart I posted.
At 37° outdoor ambient and running high demand your output is in the 45-50,000 BTU range.
Thanks for that, i can't say i really understand the chart though haha. Sounds like in your opinion it should be heating up just fine even in lower temps?
 
The chart shows the outdoor temperature at the top
The left side is the return air temperature or basically your living space temperature.
Where they intersect is your output.
 
We don't know your house's heat load, so can't say whether or not it should be able to handle all your heating needs at any given temperature. However at the temperatures you said, it should still be putting out a decent amount of heat. It shouldn't be making your house colder, outside of the periodic defrost cycle.

Yeah the times that it is blowing cold air and we've let it run for a while the temperature on the thermostat goes down
